Biography
I grew up in Indiana. After graduating from college I went west. I was 22 and at 23 I was hired by the National Park Service to work in Yellowstone National Park as a Ranger. I worked in the Lake/Fishing Bridge District for 15 years and spent 20 years in the National Park Service. In 1992 I decided to go back to school and work on a Phd in Anthropology at Indiana University-Bloomington. Upon completing my degree work I went west again so my wife, Daryl, could finish her medical degree by doing her residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
I met my wife in Washington state in 1991. I was smitten and even though she had 5 children between the ages of 2 and 10 I proposed, we married in a Provincial Park in British Columbia and headed to Bloomington so Daryl could finish her undergraduate and I could do graduate work. We had a daughter in 1993 and after my wife graduated then enrolled in IU medical school. As evident, our moving involved 6 children and some cats. After residency we moved to Reno Nevada. Most of my photographs were captured in the West.
Equipment
Starting with a canon 35mm rangefinder and a roll of Kodachrome the journey began -- I was hooked. After a couple more rangefinders I then I purchased an Olympus OM 1. A few years later I purchased a Nikon F then an F3 and finally an F6 using negative and transparency film but mostly shooting Kodachrome and Velvia. Yes, more cameras; I am not proud of this accumulation of gear-- it is not healthy. I also began shooting medium format : Bronco SQ, Fuji 6x9, Rollieflex 2.8 planar and 3.5 tessar, Horseman technical 6x9 and a large format Horseman 4x5 and a 6x17 camera for panos. I still have film in the freezer and plan to shoot film again in the near future.
I loved film and resisted digital until the Nikon D700. Today I mostly shoot with a Nikon D850, a Nikon Zf , a Fuji X100V and on occasion the D700. I need to sell some cameras or maybe I 'll give them to my children.
